Compare the Inca Trail and the Salkantay Trek: distance, altitude, permits, landscapes and difficulty, so you can choose your hike to Machu Picchu.

  3. Which one should you choose?

Two legendary treks lead to Machu Picchu, and both are unforgettable. Here is a clear comparison of the Inca Trail vs Salkantay to help you decide which adventure fits you best.

The classic Inca Trail

The 4-day Inca Trail follows an original stone path built by the Incas, passing archaeological sites that can only be reached on foot. Its highest point is Dead Woman’s Pass, at about 4,215 m (13,828 ft), and the hike ends at the Sun Gate with a first view of Machu Picchu.

  • Permits: required and limited — they often sell out months in advance.
  • Highlights: Inca ruins along the way, cloud forest, arrival through the Sun Gate.
  • Closed: every February for maintenance.

The Salkantay Trek

The Salkantay Trek crosses the shoulder of the snow-capped Salkantay mountain (6,271 m) and descends into the cloud forest towards Machu Picchu. The highest pass is around 4,600 m, so it is a little more demanding in altitude — but the mountain scenery is breathtaking.

  • Permits: not required, so it is a great option when Inca Trail permits are sold out.
  • Highlights: Humantay Lake, glaciers, changing ecosystems, fewer hikers.
  • Available: most of the year.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the Inca Trail if history and archaeology are your priority and you can book well in advance. Choose the Salkantay Trek if you love high mountain landscapes, want more flexibility with dates or prefer quieter trails.

Whichever you choose, give yourself at least two days in Cusco to acclimatize before the hike.
